Last February, Portugal’s Prime Minister, Antonio Costa announced that he considered to end the Portugal Golden Visa. This program has been around for more than a decade and has attracted many investors. In fact, Portugal Golden Visa brought over €654.2 million in financial contribution to the country last year! An increase of 58% of Residence Permits for Investments (ARI) were granted by authorities in Portugal last year.
So why does the Portuguese Government wants to end it?
The real reason is because the real estate market is saturated. In recent years, the price of real estate in Portugal has increased rapidly, especially in two biggest cities, Lisbon and Porto. Critics have said the golden visa program is responsible for this. Also, the fact that many EU citizens are buying properties, such as houses and apartments in Portugal, at prices that Portugal’s middle-class can no longet afford.
Portugal Passport Ranking
According to Passport Index Ranking, the Portugal Passport is one of the world’s top 3 strongest passports. Furthermore, it was recently approved to apply E-2 visa for investment in the United States. Investors from all over the world are eagerly applying for it. In fact, the US ranks second on the list of nationalities with the highest number of “Golden Visas Granted”.
