Getting the Vietnam passport is often not enough to be considered as a Vietnamese citizen. As a matter of fact, you will never be considered as a Vietnamese citizen just because you have a Vietnam passport! Sure, you will be able to enter and exit the country as many times as you want and stay indefinitely in Vietnam, but your privileges will end there.
Why the Vietnam Passport is Not Enough!
Vietnam is a country that does not do things like anybody else. For example, if you apply for your Vietnam Passport and that your request is granted, you won’t get the national ID that Vietnamese citizens have. And let me tell you why in just a moment, but first, let’s see what the national ID looks like and what does it do because it is for sure very different from other countries.
What is the National ID?
So, the National ID has the value of proving the identity and background of Vietnamese citizen of the issued person to carry out administrative transactions throughout the territory of Vietnam. So until now, that is just your typical identity card like in other countries. But the similarities end here, as the Vietnam National ID has more features that combine other data.
For example, instead of using the social security number to open a bank account or get a loan in Vietnam, We use the Family Book, also known as the household registration book or Ho Khau in Vietnamese. It was a book listing all your family members and your main residential address in Vietnam. But in July 2021, Vietnam decided to go paperless and include the Family Book within the National ID. So basically, you could just go open your bank account with it.
And, in the future, the government is also considering integrating other documents like the driver’s license, medical records and more within the Vietnam National ID.
