Here we go again! If you thought the pandemic was over in Vietnam, you would be mistaken. Even though pretty much the whole world has moved on and put the last three years of pandemic behind us, and the fact that the World Health Organization officially declared the end of the global health emergency caused by the pandemic, Vietnam is at it again with new restrictions reimposed. Even though we all know that the current virus strand causes begin symptoms, authorities imposed what they call 5K measures in the region of Hanoi due to a surge of positive cases. Those measures include masking, hand sanitizing and social distancing. As it is spreading to other parts of the country, Vietnam could even face a lockdown and those measures will definitely impact businesses in Vietnam, especially retail businesses.
This raises questions about Vietnam’s approach to the pandemic – are they being too insane about it? How is Vietnam’s economy coping with the situation? Let’s find out in this topic!
What Is 5K Measures In Vietnam?
The 5K measures refer to Khau trang (face mask), Khu khuan (disinfection), Khoang cach (distance), Khong tu tap (no gathering), and Khai bao y te (health declaration). These measures were designed to help prevent the spread of virus and protect public health. Retail businesses that were unable to comply with these measures may face challenges in remaining open.
Also in May of this year, the government is considering adding virus vaccines to the regular vaccinations. This means that clinics will operate for 2-4 days every month to expand vaccine availability to locals. To date, the total number of injections have exceeded 266 million, with the vaccination rate among high-risk groups and people with underlying diseases reaching over 80%.
During the virus period, in order to adapt to these changes, many retail businesses have been turning to online and e-commerce solutions. By offering their products and services online, some of these businesses were barely able to continue serving their customers.
In addition to Hanoi’s 2K measures, other cities in Vietnam are also taking steps to protect public health. For example, Ho Chi Minh City has implemented social distancing measures and restricted large gatherings. Businesses in these cities are also adapting by offering online services and implementing safety measures such as regular disinfection and temperature checks.
However due to the increase of positive cases in Hanoi, they’re considering that it would come back to the pandemic.
